Chlordane

Of the class organochlorine, it is an insecticide

Used to control

kills when ingested. Insecticide and Fumigant, restricted to the control of Termites.

Known risks associated with high exposure

Affects the nervous system and digestive system.

Builds up in tissues of fish, birds and mamals. Highly toxic to freshwater fish and invertebrates. Also bees and earthworms.

Most exposure due to ingesting contaminated foods

Other information

Low solubility in water, Thick liquid colour from clear to amber, smells of chlorine. Comes as dust, emulsifiable concentrates, oil solutions and powders.

Technical chlordane: a mixture of at least 23 components: chlordane isomers, other chlorinated hydrocarbons, and by-products.

Chlordane sticks strongly to soil, though this reduces the risk of migration to water sources, it means that affected soils remain contaminated for longer.
