Dieldrin ( Aldrin converts to Dieldrin)

Of the class organochlorine, it is an insecticide

Chemical name: 1,2,3,4,10,10-Hexachloro-6,7-epoxy- 1,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro-endo,exo- 1,4:5,8-dimethanonaphthalene

No longer used. Buildings (Anti termite) rice, corn, wheat, potatoes

Used to control

termites, grasshoppers, corn rootworm.

Now banned in USA, Till 1987 Only used in the USA to control Termites with long residual activity.

Prior to 1974 used on corn and cotton

Known risks associated with high exposure

Highly toxic and difficult to metabolise.

The cause of extinction in some areas of birds of prey.

Highly toxic to fish and other aquatic animals.

Fatal dose for adult is estimated as 5 grams

Other information

1/2 life approx 5 years though as it is a product of Aldrin, dieldrin levels are higher than would be expected from solely Dieldrin use.

Levels of Dieldrin found in air, water, ground, animals including humans

Poisoned prey in the heart of Africa: DDT and dieldrin are banned or restricted in most developed countries. But these pesticides may still be killing African birds of prey - new scientist

and (c) organochlorine poisoning. The main chemical which caused poisoning was HEOD, derived from the insecticides aldrin and dieldrin. Other deaths were attributed to poisoning by DDE (the main metabolite of the insecticide DDT) and by HE (heptachlor epoxide, derived from the insecticide heptachlor). .... Springerlink
